What Are the Differences Between Veneers and Dental Bonding in San Diego?

Dr. Roger Tran • Dec 15, 2017

Both of these cosmetic dentistry procedures are used for improving your smile. Both will mask imperfections in teeth, but there are differences in the procedures, materials, and cost. Today we’re discussing the main differences between veneers and dental bonding in San Diego.

What Are Dental Veneers?

Veneers are thin shells of porcelain that cover the fronts of the patient’s teeth, similar to how artificial fingernails work. The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD) explains that the function of veneers is to cover up gaps between teeth and hide crooked, misshapen or stained teeth.

The dentist first reshapes the teeth by removing some enamel to allow for the added thickness of the veneers. Then, a molded impression is sent to a dental lab where the porcelain veneers are custom made to precisely fit over the teeth and hide any imperfections.

For the final step, the veneers are attached to the natural teeth using the adhesive material. The entire procedure typically requires three office visits over several weeks.

Pros and Cons of Dental Veneers in San Diego

Because veneers are specially made for each patient’s teeth, it’s almost impossible to tell the difference between veneers and natural teeth. Porcelain veneers also possess a translucent quality that makes them look like natural teeth.

They won’t change color over time, and they resist staining from coffee, tea, wine, and smoking. But, they can be a more costly option, depending on geographic location and the expertise of the dentist performing the procedure.

What is Dental Bonding in San Diego?

Dental bonding is a cosmetic dentistry technique that uses a composite resin to mask dental imperfections. The resin is matched to the color of the patient’s teeth and applied by hand by the dentist. It acts like putty and can be molded and shaped to cover up imperfections, but it doesn’t have the luminous look of veneers.

The function of dental bonding is to make chipped, discolored or short teeth more aesthetically appealing. It can also be used to protect part of the tooth’s root that becomes exposed when teeth recede. Little or no tooth preparation is required prior to the procedure.

Pros and Cons of Dental Bonding in San Diego

Dental bonding is easier, faster and less expensive than veneers. The entire procedure can be completed in one office visit, and once again, the cost depends on geographic location and the experience of the dentist performing the procedure.

Unlike veneers, coffee, tea, wine, and smoking can stain the material used in dental bonding, particularly in the days immediately following the procedure. And the treatment isn’t intended to make an entire smile – it is best when used for minor imperfections and repairs, such as chips in the teeth.

Maintenance

Because veneers and dental bonding materials aren’t as strong as natural teeth, the AACD recommends that you avoid biting your nails, opening nuts with your teeth, and chewing on pens, ice or other hard objects. This could cause veneers, as well as dental bonding, to chip or fall off.

However, you won’t have to change the way you floss or brush – with proper care, dental bonding usually last 2 to 5 years, while veneers can last 15 years or more.
