Let a Skilled San Diego Dentist Return Your Smile with Dental Implants

Dr. Gary Sigafoos • February 8, 2015

Missing teeth can ruin your perfect smile, especially if it is one of your front teeth. Moreover, chewing your food will be a trial if one of your important teeth like your canines or molars are not there to do their job. In the past, false teeth or dentures were the popular option for replacing missing teeth. They had a tendency, however, to pop out of people’s mouths at inopportune times. Nowadays, a dentist in San Diego like one from A+ Family Dentistry would be able to provide you with a better choice: dental implants.

Dental implants were first developed in the 1950s and dental experts have been improving the technology ever since. Right now, the latest San Diego dental implants fall into two types. The first type is endosteal implants. These particular implants are the more common type and are implanted directly into your jawbone; screws are the usually choice for how they are shaped, but cylinders and blades are also possible. The second type is subperiosteal implants. These implants aren’t directly applied into your jaw but are attached to it via a metal framework. This is usually used when your jaw can’t handle a normal dental implant.

The procedure for getting an implant is pretty straightforward. It starts with the planning stage; your dentist examines your mouth and checks the potential site of the implant via visual inspection, x-rays, and CT scans. These can reveal whether they are eligible for an implant. Once this has been established an appointment for operation is done.

For the actual implantation, a local anesthetic is applied to the area. Afterwards, a hole is drilled into your jaw and the implant is screwed into place. Your gums are sutured and a cap is placed over the implant so it can be given a chance to heal and to also integrate into the bone of your jaw. The healing is done over a period of two to six month, during which your dentist may recommend a diet of soft foods, cold drinks, and warm soup to help with the healing.

Once the healing period is over, you will go back to the dentist to check whether the implant has been accepted. An abutment is then added to hold the replacement tooth. The crown is usually custom-made and will be designed to fit in with the rest of your teeth. The great thing about it is that with proper care, it can last a lifetime. Trust your dentist to know how to maintain and clean your new implants.
